Color Wash

To begin to add color, first create a new layer and change the blend mode of that layer to be colored. This means that you paint the color into this layer and will be joined by painting black and white underneath, this will produce a colored portrait.


The fastest way to acquire color portrait is to identify two or three primary colors such as skin color, hair and background – focus on these key areas. After that you can identify the colors that are less prominent and painting as necessary.

To complete the portrait, you should make the final layer on top of other layers to paint details are missing or color that you can not add when using a composite layer mode.

In this example, Kyle Lambert added some extra light blue highlights on the hair and eyes that could be missed on stage highlights. If you’re satisfied with the final portrait, you can either export it to print and share with the people closest to you.
