A weather forecast application to be potential evidence of weakness in the iPhone smart phone device and the Android. Some 8,000 mobile phones mentioned so ‘victims’.
This was the result of experiments carried out two researchers, Derek Brown and Daniel Tijerina, as expressed both in the RSA Conference 2010. As quoted Cumaini from DarkReading, Monday (8/3/2010), both claimed to successfully steal data from nearly 8000 phone.
The phone is a victim of a duo researchers from Digital Vaccine Group is comprised of users jailbreak iPhone version as well as running a mobile operating system Android. They managed to steal the data of the victims, including GPS coordinates and telephone number.
The two researchers created a mobile application called WeatherFist, which displays the weather forecast. Weather data from Weather Underground site.
Applications were then sent to two places download frequently used applications jailbreak version iPhone users and Android mobile phone users. Within an hour, the application site and ModMyi SlideME, obtains 126 downloads, the number jumped to 1862 in 24 hours.
But researchers do not claim to put the application into its App Store and Android Market Apple, Google it. Both App Store and Android Market has limitations and is suspected of filtering will be able to hinder their application.
The researchers also have created an application called WeatherFistBadMonkey. Well, this application is an evil version of the WeatherFist steal information such as address books, cookies, physical address and sending spam.
Fortunately, Brown and Tijerina did not intend to release this version to the public BadMonkey. “There will be no one else get this application,” Tijerina said.
This research is a way to prove the existence of potential malicious applications on the latest generation of smart phones. According to the researchers, such applications could be opened files in the phone, accessing Twitter or Facebook accounts and steal passwords.
