If you like off-road racing games then you will like iPhone game, 4×4 Jam that is available on the iPhone App Store.
4×4 Jam is developed by Invictus who have developed popular off-road racing games like 1nsane. I have been playing their iPhone game for the last few days, and I’m addicted. The best thing about the iPhone is playing this game offers that is not closed field lines as you find in other racing game. You have the freedom to race without limit.
The game offers two terrains: green fields and a desert. You can play on these terrains in any of the three game modes: a classic race mode, free roam, and jam mode.
You can select one of a 4×4 truck or Beetle in each game mode. You can also choose to race with one to three opponents.
In the first game mode, Off Road Race, you must defeat your opponent with the finish anywhere from one to ten laps.
Clock in the mode, the objective is to defeat your opponent to the door of the examination described by green flares placed randomly in the area. You get points if you are the first to cross the gate.
Roam freely in the mode, you can drive through endless desert or grassland. You can use this mode to familiarize themselves with the controls and ready for the other two competitive game modes.
You have options to change the display, sound and control settings. The game offers you three different control methods so that you can select the one which works best for you:
- Accelerometer Steering, Manual Accelerate, Manual Brake
- Accelerometer Steering, Auto Accelerate, Manual Brake
- Touch Steering, Manual Accelerate, Manual Brake
I find the accelerometer-based steering a bit difficult to control but very comfortable with the Touch steering, automatic and manual speed brake selection.
You can also select from three difficulty levels: easy, medium and difficult.
Good graphics, vehicle physics and controls make the game very enjoyable game experience.
However, I think the game should offer more than just two songs and two vehicles. Games also need multi-player features to improve the stickiness of the game as the computer will get a beating after the sometimes tedious.

Invictus is currently offering 4×4 Jam for half the price ($1.99 instead of $3.99) on the App Store as they plan to release an updated version shortly with hopefully more game modes, tracks and the multi-player feature. You can download it using this direct iTunes link.
