MediaMemo is reporting that they have heard from multiple media sources that Apple is planning a Keynote Event in September.

Apple had held the “Let’s Rock” special event on Sept. 9th last year, which was mostly focused towards music where they announced the new iPod Touch, iPod Nano and announced the release of iPhone OS 2.1. So it is possible that Apple could hold the event on Sept. 8th. This rumor is in line with the annual product cycles that Apple follows. There are many rumors, which claim that new iPod Touch will sport a camera (same as iPhone 3GS) and a microphone.

The timing of the special event wouldn’t be too bad as it might take away some thunder from Microsoft’s new Zune HD, which has received some good reviews and will be available from Sept. 15th. Some of the features that might steal the glory from Apple’s current iPod Touch are the built-in HD Radio receiver, high-def video output, an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display and a powerful Tegra chip. It is also expected to be cheaper than the current iPod Touch. Microsoft is expected to start selling 16 GB Zune HD for $219.99 and the 32 GB model for just $289.99.

Interestingly, John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who has a good track record with Apple predictions believes that though Zune HD look good in comparison to the current iPod Touches but it won’t be as good as the next generation iPod Touch.

“Clearly, the Zune HD is going to be compared to the iPod Touch. Its biggest shortcoming is that it’s just a media player and web browser; no apps, no games. The Zune HD prices look good compared to today’s iPod Touches, but not so much compared to the new camera-equipped ones Apple is set to announce next month (16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399).”

If the pricing part is true then Apple would take away the price advantage. Let’s hope that the next generation iPod Touch also includes features like faster processor, OLED screen, which would help in improving battery life as that will give us some indication on what to expect in the next generation iPhone.

We are expecting Apple to release iPhone OS 3.1 in August but based on last year’s event, Apple might announce the release of iPhone OS 3.1 (3 beta versions (beta 1, beta 2, beta 3) have been seeded to developers) only in September.

Apple could also announce the release of iTunes 9, which might include some exciting new features such as Blu-ray support, give users the ability to visually organize and arrange iPhone apps within iTunes and some kind of integration with social networking sites such as Twitter, Facebook and possibly Last.fm.
