When Apple announced iPhone 3G S at the WWDC 2009 Keynote address, they mentioned that it was the fastest iPhone they had ever created.

But they didn’t provide us any details of the processor speed or increase in RAM I thought we might have to await until June 19 when iPhone 3G S will be officially available.

We might not have to wait that long as T-Mobile.nl has posted some technical specs about iPhone 3G S revealing that the third generation iPhone comes with a faster 600 MHz processor and 256MB of RAM.
We had heard rumors and speculations that Apple’s new iPhone will come with 600 MHz and double the RAM as compared to existing iPhone models.

It looks like they were right based on the specs of iPhone 3G S posted by T-Mobile.nl, the exclusive carrier of iPhone in Netherlands.

At 600 MHz, iPhone 3G S’s processor is almost 1.5 times faster than the processor in existing iPhone models, which runs at 412 Mhz. In fact, the 2nd generation iPod Touch was the fastest device until now, runs at 532 MHz.

iPhone 3G S also has double the RAM i.e. 256MB up from 128MB in current iPhone models.

The new iPhone is also believed to also use the new PowerVR SGX graphics processing unit, which provides support for OpenGL ES 2.0 that will again improve performance, especially while playing iPhone games.

So it’s not surprising that iPhone 3G S will be 2.1x faster to launch Messages app, 2.4x to load SimCity, 3.6x faster to load an Excel attachment and 2.9x faster to load a large website.

I think that processor speed and RAM are the most underrated features on a mobile phone. But I believe it’s a big deal as a faster processor and more RAM in iPhone 3G S will help in further improving the user experience on the iPhone, which is already one of the best in the smartphone market.

There were rumors that Apple would name their third generation iPhone as “iPhone video”, but in my opinion iPhone 3G S where ‘S’ for speed though is a little odd, is more apt.
